At Rent March we know that one of the greatest pleasures of cycling around Mallorca is enjoying its landscapes and paths. However, we also know that the summer heat can be challenging to stay fit and safe during our routes. In this article, we share some essential tips to stay hydrated and make the most of your cycling adventures.
Pre-hydration: Start Before Setting Off
Proper hydration doesn't start when you're already pedaling. Make sure you drink enough water before setting off. A good tip is to drink between 500 ml and 1 liter of water about two hours before you start your ride. This will help your body maintain an adequate level of hydration.
Always Carry Water with You
Never go out without water. Use a water bottle or a hydration system, such as a camelback, that allows easy access to water as you ride. We recommend carrying at least 500 ml of water for every hour you ride. If your ride is longer, consider carrying an extra bottle.
Drink Regularly: Don't Wait Until You Are Thirsty
Thirst is a sign that your body is already starting to dehydrate. To avoid this, set a schedule for drinking water, such as every 15-20 minutes, even if you don't feel thirsty. This will help keep your hydration levels consistent.
Electrolytes: Not Just Water
On long, hot rides, you will lose salts and minerals through sweat. Consider isotonic drinks or electrolyte supplements to help replenish those essential minerals. You can find many options in specialized stores.
Clothing and Sun Protection
In addition to hydration, it is essential to protect yourself from the sun. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that reflects the sun's rays. Do not forget to use sunscreen with an adequate protection factor and, if possible, a helmet with a visor to reduce direct exposure to the sun.
Planning Your Route
Before setting out, research and plan your route. Identify places where you can stop and refuel with water. In Pollensa and its surroundings, there are several fountains and bars where you can stop to hydrate. Take advantage of these strategic points to rest and recharge your batteries.
Symptoms of Dehydration: Know and Prevent It
It is important to recognize the symptoms of dehydration, which can include excessive thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, fatigue, and dizziness. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop, hydrate and seek shade or a cool place to rest.
Post-ride Hydration
Don't forget to rehydrate after your ride. Drink water and consider an electrolyte drink to help your body recover. It's also a good time to eat fruits and water-rich foods, such as watermelon or cantaloupe, to help replenish fluids and mineral salts.
